Sleeping's been fine lately
#diary comic#cats#as a fun new development I've started to get migraines if I have too many shitty nights of sleep in a row#they're also turning 11 this year and cats tend to get needier as they get older and boy. archimedes was already a needy cat#anyway hope you're well. I'm changing up how my patreon works in an attempt to trick my stupid toddler brain into making more stuff#no impact to how often things get posted on patreon but might mean slightly slower updates here

i kind of hate how much of my affect + mannerisms are grotesque overcompensation performed for other peoples' benefit i honestly miss my offputting stone faced flat affect even if it was primarily a product of cPTSD + lack of socialisation + unmedicated mental health issues
#đ#ive noticed lately that ive developed this habit of full body gesturing like some kind of cartoon#in general my conversation is animated but like. to a ridiculous degree.#and its cute i guess. but it makes me feel like a little overexcitable puppy doing tricks for treats or something.#ive grown to really loathe it#ah well.

8 Tips for Redeeming Your Villain (Without Pissing Off Your Readers)
I won't lie, I love a good redemption arc for a villain. I love watching a formerly deplorable character atone for their sins and come to terms with the fact that they were wrong, and I especially love it when it doesn't come easy (as it shouldn't!). But I also know some writers might struggle with this, or worry about doing so in a way that won't aggravate readers or come out of left field. So, if you're struggling with this, here are some tips to help!
1.) Hint at redeemable traits early: All villains should be nuanced, in my opinion, but if you're going for a redemption arc, you should really dedicate some time to really showing those softer, redeemable sides of your villain from the beginning. It can be hesitation over their big evil schemes, or moments of really profound kindness in the midst of their cruelty. A villain that is too cruel from the get-go being redeemed will feel forced and likely uncalled for, so make sure you're going out of your way to show that the concept of "I can fix them" is actually possible.
2.) A strong motivation to change is a must: Nobody really makes an effort to change their ways unless they have a drive to do so, and the same should go for your villain. Don't make their mission to become "good" just a fleeting phase they happen to be going through (it's not like being emo, guys). Something needs to happen to them to drive them toward that switch. Maybe they realize the consequences of their actions and hate what they've done. Maybe the one person they want to save can only be saved if they change their ways. Maybe their beloved cat almost gets hurt during a scheme and they make the choice to change for their precious furry friend. You can really go nuts here!
3.) Remember "atonement, not apologies": Sometimes, "Sorry" isn't enough. In the case of a villain who might have done some pretty terrible shit in the past, I would wager it's most definitely not enough. While being remorseful is apart of atoning, it's not enough for them to just say "I'm sorry for trying to launch you into the sun" or "I'm sorry for committing arson on your base." Their actions also need to follow their apologies. They need to actually show that they're sorry, and are taking actions to fix the damage they've done. More than ever, their actions will speak louder than their dialogue.
4.) Remember that some actions are unforgiveable: There might come a moment in your villain's evildoings where they pass a point of no return. Some acts of villainy are just too far gone for chances of redemption. This doesn't mean that they can't have some version of redemption, but this just might come in the form of them accepting what they've done and making peace with it rather than being accepted and forgiven by those around them.
5.) Consequences don't just go away because they're nice now: No matter how kind your villain is choosing to be now, and how far they're willing to go to show that they've changed, they can't erase the past (of course, unless there is time travel at play, in which case...we'll talk). The consequences of their actions should still come back to bite them in some way, shape, or form, and they should still figure out how to work through them. Perhaps the villagers are still terrified of them, and likely will be for years to come. Perhaps the death of a loved one was indirectly caused by their wrongdoings, and they have to live with that.
6.) ...and neither does their core personality: At the end of the day, even though your villain is going through their redemption, they're still the same person they were as a villain. They still need to be the same ruthless or calculating or charismatic or dry or whatever kind of person they were to start. They just have less evil goals now. Write accordingly!
7.) The redemption needs to be EARNED: Redemption isn't something that just happens overnight. It needs to be treated like a practiced discipline. Your villain needs to try, fail, get up and try again, fail again, and keep trying. Maybe they almost give up at some point and try to relapse into evildoings. There needs to be a struggle as they come to terms with their actions, learn the correct way to atone, and find ways to make up for their terrible deeds. That way, when they've finally reached their peak of "good," it feels like it was deserved.
8.) Death does not always equal redemption: From years of reading, I've noticed that a common way to redeem a villain is just...killing them in an act of sacrifice. I feel like this only works if there's been a buildup to it. They can't just go out in a blaze of sacrificial glory and expect to be recounted as a hero when they were forcibly lobotomizing innocent children the day before. If your villains redemption arc does end in their death, the other tips still matter--there needs to be a buildup to it.

i dont wanna shoot down the idea that perryâs spurs are artificial but i also donât think thatâs necessary when, intersexuality exists. but above that i dont think perry would have gender dysphoria about his platypus body. his gender is âhuman guyâ. nobodyâs gonna tell perry heâs not enough of a dude because he lacks crural venom spurs, definitely not the humans in his life, and his life is made up of humans and non-platypus animals. anti-animal discrimination is his daily concern, not the one freak whoâs made it his life mission to be transphobic to platypuses on the basis of venomous spurs. although like, wow, how high effort, that's almost commendable
#idk whats compelling me to post this this wednesday morning#i already wrote this in a fic#tho if perry did lack spurs i DO believe in pnf tricking him out with debilitating toxic spurs on the basis of 'thats so badass'#ig i might mention here my human perry is intersex? it never really comes up lol#pnf fan referring to 'their' human perry like their own unique tulpa theyve developed through guided meditation#meta

Steps to NOT Write Through the Male Gaze
follow for more tips đ || request writing tips đ
1. Establish the Foundation
Understand the Male Gaze: The male gaze frames women as objects of visual pleasure, ergo valued for their beauty, sexual availability, or how they serve a male characterâs development. Avoid this lens from the start. Define Her Perspective, Not Her Appearance: Ask: How does she see the world? before how the world sees her. Build her worldview, voice, and motivations before describing how she looks. Be Conscious of Descriptive Priorities: Donât default to describing her body, clothing, or attractiveness as her most important trait. Focus on how she moves, acts, and feels instead.
2. Shape Her Role in the Story
Let Her Exist Outside of Men: She should have goals, fears, and relationships that donât revolve around male characters. Avoid âSexy Equals Strongâ Tropes: She doesnât need tight leather, flirtatious sarcasm, or constant sensuality to be powerful. Let her be strong in her own way. Donât Make Her a Reward or Symbol: She shouldnât exist to motivate, validate, or redeem a man. Her arc must stand on its own.
3. Build Her Character Authentically
Write From the Inside Out: What does she care about? What keeps her up at night? What drives her, enrages her, makes her laugh? Let Her Be Messy: She can sweat, cry, bleed, scream, get sick, or look disheveled. Donât erase humanity for aesthetics. Avoid âFlawed, But Hotâ Writing: If sheâs âawkward,â âclumsy,â or âgritty,â donât cancel that out by constantly reaffirming how stunning or sexy she is. Let the flaws stand.
4. Portray Her Strength Without Objectification
Let Her Dress for Herself, Not the Audience: If sheâs in battle, donât put her in stilettos and midriff armor. If sheâs undercover, let her choose strategy over seduction. Donât Over-Sexualize Emotional Moments: Crying isnât sexy. Anger isnât foreplay. Donât linger on her body in moments meant to be about her feelings. Keep the Camera in Check (Even in Prose): Donât describe her like a slow pan from the waist up. Prioritize what she notices, she fears, she decides.
5. Develop Relationships With Nuance
Show Female Solidarity: Give her female mentors, friends, rivals, or family. Let her world include other women who matter. Avoid One-Sided Obsession: Male characters shouldnât constantly sexualize, save, or possess her. Attraction is fine. Ownership is not. Challenge Gender Dynamics: Let her interrupt, outsmart, or lead without being âpunishedâ by the narrative. Donât reduce her competence to a joke or anomaly.
6. Develop a Satisfying, Self-Defined Arc
Let Her Endings Serve Her, Not the Guy: Whether she wins, dies, leaves, or thrives, her choices should reflect her own journey and not someone elseâs fantasy. Avoid Tragedy Porn: Donât use rape, abuse, or trauma as shallow backstory. If you explore it, treat it with gravity, research, and respect. Highlight Her Full Humanity: Show her strength, weakness, rage, love, ugliness, complexity. Thatâs what real, well-written characters deserve.
Examples of Female Characters Written Outside the Male Gaze
1. Film/TV Examples:
Arya Stark (Game of Thrones): Grows as a killer, survivor, and girl finding her own code, she was never reduced to sex appeal.
Marceline the Vampire Queen (Adventure Time): Complex, emotional, ancient, her strength isnât sexualized, but deeply personal.
Nadine (The Edge of Seventeen): Her awkwardness, jealousy, grief, and rage are all raw and fully human.
2. Literature Examples:
Celie (The Color Purple by Alice Walker): An abused woman who finds her voice and liberation, not by being beautiful, but by reclaiming herself.
Offred (The Handmaidâs Tale by Margaret Atwood): Her narrative critiques the commodification of female bodies and internal rebellion in a male-controlled society.
Claire Warden (The Guardians of Camoria series): Gritty, spiritual, violent, and wounded, she's not sexualized but carved by her own scars, instincts, and strength.

Stop sleeping on yourself.
Say it with me. STOPđSLEEPINGđONđYOURSELFđ.
What are you doing? Scrolling through TikTok and Instagram first thing in the morning? Staring at your dreams through pixels, when you could be living them? You know what has to be done to achieve it, but you'll never get it if you keep making excuses.
You want a better body? Eat cleaner and go to the gym REGULARLY.
You want clearer skin? Start and MAINTAIN a consistent skincare routine?
You want to be good at playing guitar? Play a little bit EVERY DAY.
You want to get into that college? Put in the hours of study that are NEEDED.
All those people who you see and get jealous of didn't get there in one day. They worked on themselves constantly. They got there through sheer persistence and consistency. You don't become better magically. You TAKE ACTION.
Discipline is a skill you cultivate, it's not a talent. I wake up at 5:30 in the morning EVERY DAY because I made myself get out of bed when my alarm went off. I'm getting good at Spanish, because I do my lessons EVERY DAY, without fail. I'm getting the body of my dreams because I make conscious choices to be healthy EVERY DAY.
I've been seeing self-help advice like "Oh, just be confident!" "Love yourself the way you are!"
Yeah, no shit, but it's hard to be confident when you don't feel good in your own skin. If it's something that can't be changed, acceptance will take time. But if it's something that YOU can change, why aren't you doing that? The gym is right around the corner, you don't need 20 more minutes of Netflix or TikTok. Stop making excuses for a lazy version of yourself.
You deserve better. And only you can get yourself the best things if you stop staying passive and make real changes to your life.
I know this isn't like my usual posts, but I had this revelation about 2 nights ago and while being soft with yourself is good and all, you need to mentally snap yourself out of choosing the easy way out.
Work on yourself, and everything will work out.
đŚWork on yourself, and everything will work outđŚ
xoxo

Let's Talk About Mentally Ill Villains
I don't see this as often anymore (or maybe I'm just not paying enough attention), but I feel like there was a point in time where everyone thought mental illness was the prime way to provide a villain with motive for why they were doing their terrible deeds. As a result, they end up grossly misrepresenting or totally sensationalizing the mental illness they've given their villain.
Yes, Split, I'm looking at you.
This usually results in said illness being saddled with a negative connotation, which reflects quite poorly on the people who have to deal with those issues every day.
Let me preface this by saying this isn't me telling you that you should never write mentally ill villains. Having a mental illness doesn't exclude you from being a villain in somebody's story, even when that story is fiction (and I'm saying this as a mentally ill person myself--if you have beef, talk to my Lexapro, Xanax, and Adderall).
However, if that is the route you're planning to take, you need to have some tact about it. You need to approach the chosen illness you've given your character with a sense of respect and understanding in order to ensure you're writing the ailment as realistically as possible. You HAVE to conduct research. You HAVE to talk to people who have the ailment you want to write about. You HAVE to do your due diligence to avoid pulling a Split where you not only inaccurately portray the illness, you sensationalize it to the point where it negatively affects those real people with the illness.
And if you're going to go this route, I would highly suggest that you try to not make your villain's disorder be the sole reason they're a villain. I feel like people are quite quick to saddle a villain with an ailment like psychopathy/sociopathy, or something like schizophrenia or psychosis, and letting that be the primary reason they've resorted to committing acts of villainy. Perhaps those reason exacerbate their choices, but you should aim to avoid it being the main driving force.
